Arthropods that Live on Humans

Wednesday, May 16th, 12:10 – 12:50 pm

We will explore the various types of arthropods (insects, ticks, and mites) that make their homes on humans.  Included will be lice, bed bugs, fleas, ticks, and mites.  We will discuss the biology of these critters, how they affect us, and what we can do about them.  You might be surprised!

Dr. Richard Zack is an entomologist with interests and expertise in the interactions of insects and their environments.  He also is curator and director of the M. T. James Entomological Collection.  Rich earned his doctorate at Washington State University, an MS degree in biology from Kent State University, and a BS degree in entomology from Ohio State University.  Dr. Zack’s current research interests are in the biological diversity of insects in Washington, especially in the shrub-steppe habitat of central Washington, and insect diversity in Micronesia (especially Guam and the Mariana Islands) and Guatemala.  He also studies the pest management of insects that feed on potatoes.  He is very involved in outreach activities, especially through his association with the James Collection.  Rich teaches two highly regarded courses that meet the general science requirement for students; Entomology 101, Insects and People and Entomology 102, Entomology in Human Health.  In 2011 Dr. Zack received the Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Instruction and is regarded as a “masterful teacher” who motivates and engages his students.
